Please help..997 night viewing

Getting ready to fish a night bass tournament this weekend and I won't be able to check out my manual before the tournament. I will need to be able to see the GPS charts while running, but I know it will be blinding if I leave the unit's settings as they are during the day. What do I need to do to keep the unit from blinding me w/ it's bright lighting during the night where I still the the charts, but also see past the unit while running.

The GPS in my truck automatically changes to a black background at night to keep from blinding you and I was wondering how I could make my Hummingbird 997 do the same thing.....thanks in advance for the help!

In the time it took you to make this post, you could have looked your units manual up online and actually figured it out for yourself.
Not to mention, most "Good" tournament fishermen do their homework on the lakes they fish. One would think with two days prior to a tourney, a fellow would make it a point to "read up" and at least make a valid attempt to improve their knowledge prior to fishing the tourney.

I did try to look up the manual online and I only found where I had to purchase it (maybe I looked in the wrong place) and my manual is in my boat in Kentucky and I'm in Missouri and was hoping I could figure this out before getting to the lake. I have answered and helped MANY people on this board with questions regarding Kentucky Lake and don't remember the last time I actually asked for help myself and I should've known I would get someone like yourself to answer my post.

As for most "GOOD" tournament fishermen....never claimed to be one, but I was fortunate enough to cash a pretty nice check out on the ledges in my last tournament a couple weeks ago against some "VERY GOOD" tournament fishermen along with several others this year....never hurts to be lucky I guess. As for "doing my homework".....what does this have to do w/ my question??? I appreciate your concern for my tournament preparation, but I simply wanted the GPS not to blind me while running and thought it might be a simple setting someone would know off the top of their head and help me out with. I've never had to use a GPS running at night as I've been fishing KY Lake for over 28 years and happen to be able to stumble from spot to spot on my own, but the GPS is helpful in finding spots on ledges in the middle of the lake when you are fishing a body of water that is 160,000 acres. I'm not fishing this tournament for the $, but simply for a little fun competition and hopes that I'll meet some good guys that will help each other out when they can (unlike yourself).

If anyone could answer my original question I would appreciate any help you can give.

i dont know about your unit but on my lowrance you hit the power button real fast an it has 3 different light setttings on it try this an i hope it works

Don't own that exact model, but from all I've read on this subject:

first, hit the power button and you should see a menu that will
allow you to change the backlight level.
At least on some software versions, it will not stay that way when you
power down/up. Each time you power it on you'll have to go in and turn
down the light if needed.

second, it may only go just so low (not enough) unless you have one
of the later software updates installed.

thirdly, it is my understanding that some of these early units actually went back to the factory for a hardware swap to allow for lower backlight levels.

STRAIGHT FROM THE MANUAL



"to adjust the back light or to adjust the display background color, press the power/light key to access the light and background menu. Use the 4 way cursor key to select light or background and then use the left or right cursor key to change the settings. Press exit to exit the light and background menu"

I have been a member for quite awhile on this site and have to admit I was very surprised by the response you got for a simple question. Reaper, I am proud of you and your apology. I have been concerned that over the past few months, a person ask's a question and the response is degrading and not what crappie.com is about. I also can see your point after reading the original post a few times.

Me to. I have never had a problem of apologing when I put my foot in mouth. Nice that there are a few of us left. Not seeing it in the younger generation.
