trying it again

I hit the lake early this morning. I was #2 at the ramp. I got out and set up as the sun was coming up .

it took a little bit longer this morning to get the rods out but they finally fell into place.

I ran 6 rods off the back of the boat with quick release floats on them. It takes me a little bit of time to set everything the way I want it, but this morning I had 4 fish on with one in the box before I got the 6 rods set up. Not a bad way to start the day. This morning things were a little more steady with the action with fish hitting my lines all morning long. I don't think that I got as many as I did Monday, but there was more size to them today. Then I got the fish of the day !

It took me awhile to bring him in because I didn't know he was there.

I was off the water by noon with my personal bag limit of 12 fish again. I think I may be getting this new set up working the way I want it to. Still some more little things to work out but that will come with practice and time.

Nice box of fish. So do you run different size rods to get your spread or just stagger the floats back? Also, what do the quick release floats look like. I assume the floats help control depth your jig runs?

I run 6 ft, 9 ft and 12 ft rods off each side. the rod holders are set at different heights . the shortest rods are closest to the back of the boat, I stagger the floats , shortest rod closest to the boat. that way when a rod goes off it swings past the others and I can bring it in behind the motor.

I think that they are made for heavier line than the 6# test line that I am using. I am having some problems with the light line twisting around the release stops. I'm still working on that issue.

I run 1/16 oz jigs, about a 3 ft leader to a swivel then the main rod line with a bead stop. When the main line "pops" out of the black rubber holder, the float slides down to the bead stop and swivel, making it easy to net the fish. I can let out different lengths of line to get my depth control. the more line behind the float, the further apart the floats need to be to keep from crossing each other when reeling in a line.

I have been playing with an assortment of jigs and colors. trying a light color and a dark color on each size rod. On Monday they hit 50/50 on both the light and the dark jigs. On Wednesday, the liked the lighter jigs. even though the floats may be close to the boat, I have any where from 10 to 20 feet if line out behind the float. all rods did their share of work putting fish in the boat.

On a side note, we were looking into getting another freezer, but Paula decided that I needed to learn more ways to fix the fish for dinner.

I love it. It's my main method of fishing. It takes a little time to set out all the rods, but after that I usually can sit back, get a cup of coffee and relax for a few minutes. The fun begins when more than one rod goes off at the same time. I have had as many as 6 stripers on at the same time. I just grab the shortest rod first and work my way out to the longest and hope that the fish don't try to criss cross behind the boat. I end up with fish flip flopping all over the deck. Other times it's easy peasy , one fish at a time. Some days I really get to relax, other days - not so much.

You should give it a try.
