Quick Kids Float

Myself and my buddy (big kids) took our two 9 year olds for a quick float on Cadron Creek in Central Arkansas. This is not one of the popular floating destinations in the state and we didn’t see anyone else the whole day. I knew that the conditions would be a little challenging, so I rigged up everyone with very small and light jigs. Man did it pay off. We caught around 60-70 small (think very small) longear sunfish, green sunfish, Spotted Bass, and Largemouth Bass. We did catch a few bigger bluegill. All kids had a great day. I had contemplated bringing one of my new rods so that I could really enjoy the dinks but I thought better about it. My BPS microlight now feels like a broom stick compared to the JDM rods I recently got. I need to find a good light action rod (6.5 - 7’) that I wouldn’t cry over if I lost it or broke it on a float. Any suggestions? My track record of loosing or breaking gear on float trips is pretty bad, especially when kids are involved. I recently bought a cheap 7' $17 2 piece light Shakespeare at Walmart. I like it more than the $50 all-star one piece it replaced.

In the car and dont have model number, but I can get it when I get home if youd like.

I have the same rod. It’s ok but not very sensitive. I was kind of looking for a diamond in the rough.

I second the recommendation for the Shakespeare ultralights,they are cheap and sensitive and very light. however the fiberglass yellow eagle claw ultralights are the rods i would run if i had a choice, they are the standard for cheap but good ultralight/light spinning rods. I have broke several of the Shakespeare rods below the tip, never on a fish just mishandling.

Ask alphahawk how the trout slayer rod compares to the tick ice cube. It’s only $50 and a great rod I think.

Great pics and a great trip. I can’t tell you how much you will treasure these times when you get older and the kids are grown and moved away. ( Be sure you get those pictures saved some where. ) Congrats on a good trip.

I’ve been hearing great things about the Trout Magnet Trout Slayer Rod. Haven’t gotten my hands on one yet, but planning to in the very near future. I’ve always had great luck out of Jeffs products, and I’m a big believer in them.
