I have a Briggs, does pretty good on my 12 and 14' flat bottoms in flooded woods.
I say a good trolling motor would do about as good as a 5hp and be a heckuva lot cheaper.

Clarification motor for 1236 G tuned me into purchasing last year!!! Plan motoring into fishery and sculling upon those sneaky fishes!!
Bass Pro got a sale right now on small merc motors. Don't list price just discount. Any of them small ones should be ok. If it was me I'd call Bill (BRM) and get a Tohatsu.

I had a 5hp Merc 4s, ran good, easy to deal with, no speed demon for sure, but would get you there, eventually. LOL Tohatsu may still make the small Merc's, but not 100% on that. Get the brand that you can get service on w/o having to drive too far.
What size lakes you taking that 1236 on? I agree with Cray on the Tohatsu engine, Yamaha, Suzuki, or a Mercury wouldn't be a deal killer either if the price was right. If just a real small lake I would agree with a 55# thrust TM and two 31's or 29's in parallel would suffice. If your running bigger lakes and rivers then yes I would go with the outboard as well.
Brm- Tohatsu- call Bill. Great motors!!
Haven't heard that name in a while. Debbie use to work at a tv, vcr, radio repair shop. No matter what brand vcr you had it was made by Tohatsu.
