long lining

I hear a lot of talk this time of year about catching good crappie spider riggin. what about long lining in December and janurary. anybody out there have any luck l lining in cold water

I would think it should work, the key is find the speed they want

I have a friend that tried it Thursday at Logan Martin and he only caught a couple of bass. In our area it usually starts to work in about February.

It is a lot easier to start here when the water temp. is around 52 degrees and you start seeing fish move up in the water column. The fish are a lot easier to catch. You can longing a lot of deeper fish but it requires a lot heavier jig or jigs. You can add split shots to your jig to get down to the depth of the fish are at.

I long line in the winter, .7 to .9mph. I add weight till I reach the right depth. If crappie are under 15/18', I push jigs at same speed with a 1oz weight. Works for me. 30' of line equals 20' deep +-.

You can usually find fish starting in Dec. It gets better as it gets towards the spawn. Just have to find the right depth, and it can be deep sometimes.

thanks everybody for the input that what I like about crappie.com always somebody to learn from

I like long lining when the fish are shallow but now they are deep I prefer spider rigging/ pushing but I far from an expert

You would probably have better luck spider riggin or pushing jigs if they are real deep but they can be caught in January and February long lining starting with a 1/8 pounce jig with a # 5 split shot or even a 1/4 oz jig. Start with different combos until you find the fish.
