I have crappie rods spooled with from 1# Nanofil to 20# braid. It depends on what I am doing with each.
I don't think you can use the same line for all situations. And I use different colors also. Hi Viz for some and flourocarbon (suppose to be invisible underwater) for others.
And as far as loosing hooks and jigs - if you are not loosing them you are not putting them where the fish are. Some have gone to weedless jigs and hooks, but I feel I lose too many fish with them, so I just buy my hooks and jigs in bulk.
casting ,jigging or ? For crappie or bream ?
Casting for bream I use hand made jigs so they hard to get
We have a couple places like that around here and sometimes when it gets thick enough you have to use the long pole and just drop it in the holes. If you use 20# braid you will be able to pull it loose ...but if the hook is not wire you may just pull the boat to it or tear the jig up. The lilly pads and some grass stalks are so tough they are just near impossible to pull out or tear loose from. DO NOT grab the braid with your hand and commence to pulling...the stuff will cut you. Have to wrap it around something to pull with. I know how you feel I like to cast to big bull bluegill and have some fight with a little distance between them and me so the fight will last...but Lily pads and heavy grass man thats tough fishing. You might try to rig a wire weed guard on the jigs. Also some of the places with pads are gin clear and shallow so you may have problem with any line with too much visibility.
I'm fishing the edges and pockets in the pads soon as you hook one it heads straight into it the price I pay for my jigs hate to loose many
Inwas going to suggest buying jigheads by the hundreds. But seeing you tie your ownnwhat DBD said is probably best solution. 10/2 Powerpro should work it out.
If I could find a factory made that worked for me I would stock up and not worry about it
Start tying your own jigs.
