I have a 1996 Stratos with a 1996 Mercury 150 XR6. My steering cables have gotten so bad I can hardly turn my steering wheel. I took my boat to a local repair shop, Meridian Outboards, and they gave me this quote. Parts-$650 and Labor-$920. I told them I'd pick my boat up tomorrow morning and take it somewhere else. What do you guys think?

Dual cables aint cheep. For a hundred or so more u can put hydraulic on it. Thats what im gonna do
-
Sounds ridiculous. Hydraulic should cost less than that.

Scott....I just looked at BPS and you can get a complete rack and pinion no-feedback steering system for $462 I bet you and Gene could install it....not that much to it. http://www.basspro.com/Teleflex-Mari.../product/1155/

I told these jacklegs over here that I'd be there tomorrow morning to get my boat. That's ridiculous.

Scott you can get a Baystar hyd. kit on amazon for $499 plus $20 shipping. It will work on your boat. The one I have on my 20 ft Xpress with a 200 Yamaha SHO goes for about $700 on amazon. The other type of no feedback cable kits are even cheaper. This is my 2nd boat with hydraulic. I really like it. Even with about 4 hrs labor it should be under a thousand. ( I asked my bil about the labor. He sold and rigged boats for 30 yrs.)

get the parts and i'll put it in if you'll be my gopher

I had a no feedback cable system put on mine .....works great...did not take them long to put it on at Sherms Marine in Amory.....the kit and labor combined was cheaper than the kits at BPS
