question

Hello, I am new to crappie fishing an have a question on color. with all the different colors and color combos. where do You start? Cant have every color. I guess what I am asking is their some base colors an you go from the

Also when you are trying to find the right color about how long do you use the color? I know their is no set time limit just trying to find if I am not to quick to change color.

Welcome to the board. Just my two cents, I think contrast is more important than color most of the time. If you stick to lighter color combinations on bright days/clearer water, and darker color combo's on cloudy overcast days and dirty water, you will catch fish. By contrast, I mean a different color head, body and tail. Generally something like black/chartreuse, blue/white, black/red, white/chartreuse etc will catch fish under most conditions. I also like an orange or pink jig head for contrast.

Can't go wrong on Truman with black - chartreuse or silver - chartreuse. LOZ anything with chartreuse tail seems good as well as blue and white. I like an orange or yellow head. The longer you fish you will grow your go to combo and have confidence in acouple different set ups. Oh and welcome to the site.

I have to say Black/Chartruese & Lime/Chartruese are the best all around colors. I know many a fisherman and these are their staples. I use them often.

My 2 cents on the others.

I like Light Blue / White for clear water conditions on sunny and dark days.
Muddy conditions I like Pink / Black or Red / Yellow
My other two staples are rootbeer/chartruese Purple/Chartruese for all around colors.
I typically only break out other colors if I'm getting my butt handed to me by another fisherman in the boat.

Every person has their confidence go to colors so there will be many opinions.

Blue and White & Red and White

Fishing Truman mainly I have 5 favorites, one is black/chartuse and white/chartuse and then blue/white, black/pink and silver glitter/chartuse and I use a orange head jig 100 % of the time...... I will use a pink head once in awhile......... I have never had to sway from any of these color combo's here on Truman......muddy water or high stain I ususally use the black/pink, and all the other colors are for clearer water and about all of them work all the time........ hope this helps, and welcome to the site........now open up the lakes so we can try out these colors......

Welcome to the site!! You don't say which lake you fish, if any. Some lakes have colors that work in that lake most of the time. Lots of guys go with colors they feel confident in. Most of my lures will have some chartreuse in them, with other colors. I rarely use a bait with only one solid color. Sparkle is good....adds a little flash. Try some of the jig heads with spinner blades, such as the roadrunner types. Use different lure styles....tube baits, curly tails, carrot baits. You should also get some different weight jig heads for different conditions. Sometimes the fish want the bait to fall slowly, other times they are more aggressive, and sometimes the wind is blowing so dang hard that you have to use a heavier bait. Learn to watch your line.

Ditto on which lake are your going to concentrate on. That will make a world of difference as will the time of the year.

As you can already tell, everybody has an opinion. My point is, you'll have to develop your own favorite color choices based on what works for you. Start with a handfull of basic colors and go fishing. The crappie will tell you what they want. Best of all, share the boat with a good friend or a child. Either one has a way of making any day a little better. Tight lines.

Everybody have gave you some great advise. BUT everybody fishes alittle different and your way of fishing may need something just a touch different. Get you a couple different colors and styles and go give it a try. You will figure out what works for you and your style.
