need help

I have a 998 SI Humminbird. I have a few questions. On my normal sonar it always shows a thick color line at the top of the water column but never shows a bottom color or anything indicating where the bottom is and what the contour looks like. Why is it doing this? Secondly, it continues to show fish symbols back to back to back off and on repeatedly at the same depths and it usually is like 2.1 2.1 2.1 2.1 2.1 feet, then it might go to 2.2 2.2 2.2 2.2 something like this. Any thoughts on this. I hate that I spent so much money on this unit and I am too dumb to figure it out and it has not helped me any.

Hey seeker, are you sure nothing is blocking your transducer? Or it's angle is off? That's the only time I've seen what your talking about. Maybe some of these guys with more knowledge will have more information. I'm guessing you have Fish ID on? How about the Switch Fire is it on or off? I don't care much for the Switch Fire setting JMHO.

to be honest I am very very dumb when it comes to this unit. It is in the same position it is in since it was installed and it just started doing this the last couple trips. Something has always interfered with it a little cause I always see the little white line for interference on one side. I think it is the intake screen for my livewell but it is just barely picking it up. I do not want to move the ducer anymore cause it was put in another place than the one that was taken off so there are already too many holes drilled in the back. I never get down imaging pictures like the ones I see posted and I am not sure which screen is the switchfire. The sonar screens look too much alike for me to know anything. Call me a triple illiterate fishfinder idiot lol

I think you are selling your self a little short :Rofl I think your going to have do like I did and leave the fishing gear at home a couple times and take the manual with you instead.
That's the only way I could figure it out. I could look at the pictures in the book and play with the unit until I kind of figured it out. If you mess up just restore defaults and try again.
Leaving the fishing gear at home is the hardest part :Rofl

I'll trade you a 788ci with an extra quadrabeam trans and pay the shipping cost:biggrin. All kidding aside I'd do the restore and check to make sure the ducer wasn't bumped , and turn the fish id off.

Can you post some screenshots of what you are seeing...??

snake n da brush I do not have a memory card to get it loaded on computer or I would. wantabe (Leaving the fishing gear at home is the hardest part) I kind of sorta have did that too lol.

Another thing it is doing is when I turn it on sometimes the unit blacks out and freezes up and wont do anything. I have to disconnect power source and start over.
