New Houstonian here
I"m Jeff, I live in and around the Houston area...
I started fishing when I was a kid, going out with my grandfather who taught me how to run jug lines and trot lines for catfish feasts. We would go out saltwater after trout and reds as well when the fancy struck us to go saltwater.
Since he passed I have stutter stepped my fishing, not finding folks in my friend circle who either wanted to fish or whom I thought I could spend that many hours alone with...*laugh* Enough so that when my garage was broken into and my fishing stuff was stolen several years ago I didn't bother to replace it.
Fast forward to this weekend, my wife (bless her heart) surprised me with a pair of 7' rods with spincast reels and a pontoon boat rented out on Lake Conroe to go fishing. After loading up on meal worms and some glow in the dark green dyed live worms, weights and some stainless steel leaders with some interesting hooks we were off. We didn't catch anything, and I didn't have the heart to tell my wife she had outfitted us wrong, but she did have some fish follow her line up (too small for the hook) and she wants to go fishing more...
I'm good with that, going to get us some of the right gear and look into fishing for crappie and other panfish around marina's and the like. If she sticks with it I"ll go get us a small boat so we can go out and find some honey holes of our own.
Fishing for panfish as anything but bait is a new world to me. Not something I would have thought of as I was a catfish and bass man when it came to fresh water. I caught small crappie, perch and brim as bait and threw anything too big back. So, I'm going to invest in some low end ultra light setups for her and I, and go back to the basics...see if I can't remember some of the things I used to do to catch fish...*laugh*.
So Hi...I'm sure I will see y'all around as I lurk a bit...
