What length poles do you guys suggest. I mainly long line troll but have now rigged the boat for spider rigging also. Any suggestions on length of pole? I can understand the thought on real long poles in the 14 to 16 foot range to get out away from the boat but it would seam to be so far out in front that by the time you see what is under you on your depth finder, the poles will already be past it. Thoughts?
I do nothing but spyder rig fish . Rigged up to run 8 poles up front and 8 off the back. Use 10's out front, 11's , then 12's, and on outside use 14's. that way I pretty well cover a 28 ft swath. do the reverse for the rear :D:D
Sounds like a plan and I will be rigged more for six up front and rear but might look to add another on both ends. I guess my next question is what the heck do the rigs look like? What size weights and are they like the KY Lake Crappie rig with the weight at the bottom? Do you ever fish multiple hooks on one pole?
I Use 12 And 14 Footers In Front And Back... Had A Few 16 Footers But Way To Long For My 18 Foot Boat And Ackward To Handle... I Use 1/2 Oz To 3/4 Oz Egg Sinkers On The Kentucky Lake Rigs... A Few 3/8 Egg Sinkers If Going To Use To 1/8 Or 1/16 Ounce Jig Heads Instead Of Hooks For Minners... I Have 2 Driftmasters T250 S Up Front And Like Them A Lot.. Have A Homemade Welded Rig In Back That Swivels On The Seat Post And Works Ok... I Usually Fish 6 To 8 Up Front And Thats Enough For Me... I Do Like To Have A Frosty Beverage In My Hand And Relax When Im Out There.. And The Old Man Likes 3 Or 4 In Back... Kentucky Lake And Reelfoot 12 Footers Are Nice, But I Fish A Few Strip Pits And Like That Extra Length Because They Can Become Clear In A Hurry And Especially On Sunny Day
Brand new to spider rigging. Matter of fact got turned on to it early spring this year. Have had good success and am still catching quite a few fish doing it. Not sure it's right, but I'm fishing two poles up front that are 13' and then two 12 fters beside them, on each side off the front of the boat...total of 8 poles. I have every other one rigged with two 1/16 oz. jigs on loopm knots I tip with minnows. The other 4 poles are rigged with two hooks on loop knots. All have a 1/2 to 3/4 sinker on the bottom. Last weekend I caught fish early morning closer towards the banks @ 6' deep. When the sun got hot I trolled out to the creek channel and fished the jigs/hooks around 12' and caught fish. Only problem I've seen about rigging two baits per line is if youre using minnows youre gonna go thru twice as many since when a fish hits it usually shakes off BOTH minnows as youre getting the fish in the boat and in your hand. Eight poles are about all I want to fish as they can keep you quite busy at times.:)
I use 8-Wally Marshall 12' trolling rods for the extra backbone. Started with 10' but like the 12' much better. Gets them out in front of and away from the trolling motor.
I also used the Wally Marshall rods,have two 14 footer and 4 12 footer also have some of the nine footers but I prefer the 12 footer.

All The Rods I Use Are Wally Marshall Tightline Specials Or Universals Because You Can Pick Them Up Cheap When They Are On Sale... The Tightline Specials Do Have A Better Backbone.. Have 3 Of 12 Foot Pro Series And They Are Nice Rods Also For The Price When They Are On Sale... Lowes Or Home Depot Have Plenty Of Velcro U Can Buy To Break Them Down And Store Real Easy..
I've experimented with everything from 10' to 14' (spent a lot of $ too). I use nothing but 12' WM universal's. Easy to handle, easy to stow, good all around length for Ky. Lake.
gabowman,somebody on here said to cut up some small pices from tubes and put them on after the minnow to keep from losing them so easy
