I usually only wear my vest when I am under power with my gas engine or if the weather is really rough.
But, I found out yesterday, you can fall overboard 10 feet from shore while holding over a lay down and not moving. First time for me. Luckily I can swim and had read a thread here about getting back in the boat by climbing up the motor. Broke a 10 foot BnM poll, but the thing that was most damaged was my pride.
Certainly will pray for that family who lost a loved one.
Fell myself once at Rough during a crappie tournament. Water was right at 50 degrees and I immediately cramped up. I was only 40 feet from the shore and I would not have made it. My friend (who is half my weight) pulled me in. Thank God he was more paniced then me and had an adrenaline rush. I broke three b&m poles on that trip to the water and didn't give it one thought. Sorry he to hear about the gentleman at T-Ville. I would have been out there like I am almost every Friday but I had to go through some training in Frankfort and couldn't go. I do wear mine while I am running with the kill switch on but have to admit I don't when I am fishing.
I nearly got run over by a boat about 3 weeks ago....I'm very cautious now...I saw the bottom of his boat, he threw a huge wave into my boat, but by the Grace of God he didn't hit me.......remember, pass portside to portside! I wear my vest under power and in rough water now! Momma didn't raise no dummy!
Its people like that that can ruin a day on the water. It amazes me how many people almost cause accidents or who are just inconsiderate. We had a skier Saturday who knew we were fishing and seemed to keep trying to get closer and closer on purpose. Ive even seen fisherman crank down the trottle right smack in the middle of where everyone is spider rigging or long line trolling and he was one of us doing the same thing before he decides to move at full speed. Glad to see you where not hit and glad your didn't have a heart attack because I would have.
