I'm coming down Wednesday May 13th to Kentucky Lake and I'm looking for a recent fishing report (like from someone who fished it today). The most recent one I can find is May 7th, and since then we've had some pretty bad weather and a lot of rain. I know the lake is up ( 4 foot over pool) and has everything all messed up. Can anyone tell me what the gills are doing or anything thats biting for that matter. I was really hoping to get on some beds. I'm staying on Jonathon creek. Thanks!
Steve McAdams fishing report was updated yesterday, he is in the Paris, TN area but normally find it to be very accurate. Said gills/reddear bite is holding up best, but you can check it out yourself at his website. If you're going Wednesday be careful, winds are supposed to be 17-25 gusting to 33 last time I checked. I don't guess I'm gonna try to go til Thursday if I get to go at all this week. Wish I had some first hand info for you but I haven't fished any since weekend before this past one on Johnathan Creek, gills were biting good despite the water coming up high.
Thanks slabmaster, I'll check out Steve McAdams report, Also thanks on the high wind warning, that tells me I should settle in, take it easy and maybe just wait it out until Thursday. Can't fish if my boats sunk!
Probably a good idea unless you have a big boat or know a protected spot to put in at. Good luck if you get go, was gonna try it Thursday myself but now they have 70% chance storms in the forecast. Just have to wait and see.
You might try Blood River if the wind gets up high. It has a north/south arm and an east/west arm so you can always find at least one bank protected from the wind and it is a lake itself to many. I'd say the better bass are finishing up the spawn and moving to secondary points along creek channels and the 1st drops in the bays. Some gills will still be on beds most that I've found have been in 6' to 7' of water. Shellcracker....wish I new as I sure can't seem to find any at all. Catfish are currently all along the edge of the flooded shoreline as long as the water doesn't start dropping....bigger ones are staying in deeper water and moving in next to the shore in lower light. Crappie...sorry but I'm done w/ them till this Fall. Good luck and be safe.
Caseydrew, you don't ever fish for crappie at night? Am I the only guy out there that hangs lights for crappie? I have always done real well doing it this way. I am probably heading out Saturday night to do it but of course the weather report is bad.
I've got a green light about 6' long and 2" in dia. I hang under the boat to crappie fish at night when I go to Texas and usually load the boat and have a heck of a good time. I always say I'm going to do the same on KY Lake, but I'm alway too tired after fishing all day and crash. Good luck Sat. night.Quote:

Fishing at night is fairly simple. Some people hang lanterns while others purchase a underwater green light and fish under those. I purchased my green light from BassPro for right at $30 I believe. I typically try to position myself over some structure that is sitting right on the edge of deep water and shallow water. The lights will eventually bring in the bugs, which brings in the minnows, which brings in the crappie. Tie off to standing timber and throw an anchor out the other end. We usually pack up food and drinks like on a normal day and just hang out. The crappie typically don't hammer these minnows uder the lights. I use a KY Crappie Rig with two sets of hooks at different levels tipped with minnows. The crappie will alomst always just creak up and suck them into their mouth. I literally watch for my line to just start moving sideways a little and I set the hook. Very rairly do you have one just smash it. If you do get a big hit, it is probably a hybrid or striper. it is a fun night under the stars and it is a peaceful as you can get. No boats, and no one to bug you. I would have a cell phone, marine radio or some sort of emergency communications because there is very few people on the water and if you need help you need to be able to contact someone. I keep my marine radio and cell on me. Houseboaters almost always keep their marine radios on if your cell phone won't work. There is nothing worse then not being able to fire up your boat at 3:00am when you are miles from the marina. I would also make sure you have GPS because pre-GPS, I got stuck in a fog bank that got me lost for hours and had my family in a panic. I literally couldn't see the front of my boat it was so thick.
