Hackle and New Age Chenille First Tye

Hey Guys

This here is my first try with the new age chenille and using hackle as the tale on a jig. Have a few questions and if you have any suggestions.

1. How well dos hackle as a tale hold up to catching numerous fish? Does it break off easily?

2. How do you make a the hackle give a bigger appearance without having to put a ton of hackle on, or in this case is less better.

3. Is the tale on this one extending out to far should it be shorter

Doc. I think they are a little long. Should be about a 1 into 1 1/4 past the bend. I use three feathers. You will notice that most of the hackle has a bend in it. I take the first one and lay it on my desk with the bend or hump facing up. the second one does not really matter. Third one I stack on top of the other two with the hump down or the tip up. I then pick them up and lay them stacked on the shank and hold them tight while I wrap them. If your lucky they will not rotate and the final result is the bottom feathers curves down and the other two will curve up. Or if they rotate they will both flair out from the sides. Alot of times it is a hit or miss thing. Sometimes they will turn out all different and sometimes I may hole it up and say,,,,Damnnnnn that lucks good!!. I started added a bit of marabou to the tail just to make it look wider and give a tiny bit of action in the water. The hackle will not give you any action like the marabou does.
Maybe Skip can add to this if he has a trick

So do you add the marabou after the hackle has been attached to the hook

How many wraps of chenille do you have on that jig you posted here or is that the large size chenille

Your using Glow grn.in #3"looks like you mat need to wrap it just a lil tighter there bud";)

Far as the hackle at the tail",if you want to achieve a more fuller look",try applying a lil maribou along with the hackle it self"maybe shorten the length of said hackle a lil too"...

Other than that I like the glow chenille" dos really well for me around the eastern seaboard where i am on the Chesapeake"I prefer the Orange in #4 size"works well... "Keep a tying my friend!"Looks great"!:)

On the chenille I have three layer there may be why it looks kind of loose in the pic, but from what you are saying one layer should be enough. It just looked like an underfeed jig to me with one layer mighty skinny

Thats a #2 med crystal antron chenille. It is a bit thinker than new age or regular. I wrap the shank with thread first and then tie the hackle down first. Then the marabou and then the chenille. I hold the end of the chenille by the head and wrap it with thread back to the bend and then back up to the head. I then roatate my vise to wrap the chenille from the hook bend back up to the head and then whip finish it off. So it is not two wraps of chenille it is only one but it is warped over one that lies flat on the shank. So I guess it would give the thickness of a bit over one wrap ?
