Humminbird TM problem- please help

Sorry I dont know why i put Humminbird in the header....In my rage, i was confused....

I bought a used Minn Kota 24v 65lb thrust TM. The guy said it was about 5 years old. I tried it out before i bought it and it seemed to work fine. But now it seems that it doesnt want to run. I just paid to have it installed on my boat too!:mad:

It is foot controlled and when i press on the foot button there is a slight clicking sound. The sound is coming from the electronic componets in the foot pedal. Kinda like a tiny squeek. After a while, the motor seems like it tries to turn ( I can feel some type of movement in the shaft and motor) but doesnt. If i continue to do this, it eventually will start the motor on the TM but not always. Its like it has to warm up or something. Has anyone ever ran into this problem...:mad:

Just my luck...right when the fish start biting too.

Had that problem with my mk too. Sent it in 3 times for repairs in les than 2 years. Finally gave it away and got a MG. Call the service dept and tell them about your problem. I hope you have a backup ready to use.:mad:

Look and see if you can use someone else's foot pedal to see if that is where the problem is. If it is in the foot pedal, that should not be too bad to repair or replace. If it is not in the foot pedal, then I would have the TM checked out by an authorized dealer. Repairs on motors usually are not that costly compared to buying another trolling motor. I had some problems with my foot pedal 2 months after I bought the TM brand new. It was a piece of cake to fix, but I went with a hand control, not the wireless co-pilot, and have not had any problems since then.

Make sure that it is wired up right from the battery.

jumper across the push button switch on the foot pedal to see if the switch is working as it should.

they may have wired for a 12 volt and not getting the full 24 volts.

for 24 volts positive of one battery to positive of the trollmotor

negtaive of the other battery to negative of of the trollmotor

a jumper wire between the neg and positive post that are empty.

check voltage at the troll motor.

Yes, check for 24V and good connections. Put a meter on the plug recepticle and on the foot pedal and see if you're losing voltage between the two.

You didn't say, but I'm guessing this is a power drive or Terrova. If it is, the foot pedal switch out might help you diagnose or isolate the problem.

Thanks for the help guys. The TM is a Maxxum 65lb.

I did check the voltage and it seems to be getting the full 24v to the TM but when it doesnt work, it only registers about 12v at the foot switch in the pedal. I am thinking it is a problem in the switch in the footpedal but dont have a definate way to test it. I dont think the problem is in the motor itself, merely in the electronics on the foot pedal. I plan on taking it to a shop but the closest one is still over an hour away.

I was so mad the day that I found this problem I bought a new MK PD and it showed up today. I am planning on putting it on the boat tonight and maybe getting out this weekend to try it out. :)

5 years ago was about the time MK had a run of bad foot pedals. Like mentioned, borrow someones pedal and try it. Also make sure all connections are tight. A loose connection can allow you to read proper voltage but not allow proper amperage.

Can't switch out the pedals on the maxxums with any ease IBN.

I'm kind of stumped on this one. The problem mentioned on the bad pedals was actually a bad board which was in the pedal, but those would burn up and the motor would not work at all.

Can't imagine any way that 24V at the plug could turn to 12V. I guess, it could be wired with 3 wires, with a negative and 2 12V positives that are somehow combined after the plug at the pedal itself and somehow you're losing connection on one of those wires. Never seen it done that way though.

In any event, putting 12V to that motor is gonna ruin it in short order, so I'd get it fixed rather than keep on running it. See you've got another, you're swapping to so you've got that covered and time to fool with it now.

Give Josh at Foster's a call and ask for some help. He's helped me out a time or two and has any parts you might need at reasonable rates.

Does it run in "continuous"? If it does, it's your switch and that's a cheap fix.
