Just wondering if anyone here ever fishes Island 40 Chute. Was considering going there next week, but am curious to what the river stage needs to be. Any info on this spot would be great. Thanks.

The river starts backing in there at 16 feet at the memphis gauge. 33 feet at memphis and Mr. Sample shuts his gates and heads for higher ground~
so do I need to wait until it gets below 16 feet?
Not necessarily. But I'd wait it out right now with the Memphis gauge at 24'. With changing water levels, I've had the best luck on a slow rise. Poor ol' Mr. Sample has had some tough fishing the last few years. Watch out for the carp...and I'd like to hear the report when you do get out there.
If I were pickin' spots right now, I'd pick Midway considering the river's holdin' steady at 24' for a day or two.
And for anyone interested...here's a good website to keep up with the river forecast...
Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service: Memphis: Mississippi River at Memphis
Hey, I'm new to the site and I've heard of Midway, how do you get there?
I'm usually coming from the other direction (West Memphis). But at least these directions will get you there. Somebody else may have a better route coming from Hughes.
Take 38 out of Hughes and turn Right on CR 617 at the big hairpin curve. Just follow the gravel road until you come up on the levee, and it will be right there as you come over. And take it easy down the gravel road 'cuz it will shake every tooth out of yer head...

Thanks ceb! I really appreciate the info and the map.
If coming down 55 to 40 West take the Hwy 147 Exit....south...the road has a lot of curves go to horshoe lake and stop at The store on 147...can't miss it...ask them how to get to Midway from there...it is about 10 miles from Bonds' store......The reason I gave you these directions instead of finishing them is it would be much easier for them to tell you than me to type it...:D
On 2nd thought Ceb's map shows you the route from Horseshoe. The yellow line...HWY 38 runs from Horseshoe to Hughes. Where 38 Yellow line meets the purple line of Ceb's is a SHARP curve....to the left is a gravel road and a sign that says Ed's Boat Camp..about 3 miles to the levee. A word of caution...drive carefuly on the gravel road. That road starts at a farm headquarters...hard to miss. On that gravel road they have now dug out both sides and I am waiting for the first accident to drown someone there.
