Millwood Report, April 3 - 7

Just got back from a few days of fishing at Millwood. We fished up on the river Friday afternoon and only caught 3 crappie and several bass. The water temp was any where from 55 to 60 degrees. We put in at Okay on Saturday and fished the grass. Three of us filled the livewell full with 60 crappie. They range from 1 lb up to 2.5 lb. Water temp was 65 to 67 degrees.

We fished the grass again on Sunday morning and caught 21 before the front came in. After the front we managed to pick-up 7 more. The water level had dropped about a foot by Monday morning and was very muddy. Water temps fell to 58 - 60 degrees. Fighting the cold and the wind two of us fished on Monday and caught 17. Most these fish were caught in the afternoon in the Cypress trees. We fished the Cypress trees again on Tuesday and only caught 5 by 1:00, but the action picked up that afternoon and we ended up with 23 good crappie.


If the weather gets right and stays warm the crappie will start to spawn in a few days. All the females were ready to pop.

Sounds like you timed it pretty good, no telling how many yall would have got if the cold front had not pushed thru. I can tell from the picture you were in the right spot, the water warms up behind that island before anywhere else on the lake. Come back in a couple weeks and you can do the same thing on the east side of the lake.

We probably would have had more crappie then we wanted to clean if the weather would have held. I'm thinking about another trip down there around the 18th. What part of the east side are you talking about?

Those are some dandy fish WT, sounds like a great trip. You know your on them when the water level and water temps are taking a dive and your still catching fish, WTG!

Sorry about that Water Turkey, I can't tell my east from my west sometimes. I usually start on the east side where you were fishing early them migrate over to the west side later in the spring. I like to put in at State Park and go up in the Big Bayou area. Several groups of green cypress in there, also around Bee Lake and Yarborough

Ok I know where you're talking about Roscoeman. We did try some of those small coves on the west side. The water temp was 65 last friday evening over there but we didn't find any fish.
