well we keep a gallon pickle jar on the boat just in case ,you put a hole in the top of the lid and you tie a 1/4 in rope thru the whole with a knot on the end you put about a dozen crappie minnows inside the jar ,fill with water and lower over the side until you reach the depth of the inactive fish and sometimes this will trigger the crappie to start bitting if they are in a nonactive pattern.
if i mark school and cant get them to bite, i'll break up a couple dead minnows and send them down. works sometimes.
Read this in F&S, I think. Get a small paper bag (we call them pokes) and fill with raw white rice. tie a string around the top and lower down into a brushpile that is holding inactive fish. wait several minutes for the bag to get waterlogged, then yank the string up. the bag will break open, releasing the rice, that will look like maggots to the baitfish, which will swarm to it, thus triggering the crappie bite. and no I haven't tried this yet, someone let me know if it works.
Ive used boiled rice.
ive used a panty hose filled with grits and a rock and punch a couple small holes in the side and throw it down near a brushpile. worked for me.
I have caught wild shinners in FL with grits and a cast net I bet it would work...
