New to Virginia fishing and I'm looking for a go place to fill a cooler at. I live down the street from Occoquan Reservoir and plan on trying it this weekend. Where is the best place to fish in the Occoquan? It is so big that I am sure to strike out if I try to fish it without some tips!
Also, what are the best lakes to fish for the specks up here in the north?
Lastly, when do the specks start moving into the shallows, here in Virginia?

Now, if you ever venture down to SE VA, I can give you plenty of help.
If want some good line pullage check out Fletcher's boat house on the potomac river ...they are listed the river there at fletcjers is just below where the potomac becomes a tidal basin and is very loaded with all species of fish ....I have never crappied there but have been there numerous times in the early 90's ....they have hand built wooden v bottom boats for rent and you add your own power!!!! there are walleye smallies largemouth rockfish herring white perch and all the catfish you can stand... It will require a D.C. permit not much though and this place is a gorgeous fishery never know your in D.C. just above Georgetown....The white perch should be bout in at this time Its worth the phone call anyhow.. In D.C. water you are allowed to use treble hooks and snatch herring wich is fun as well..... good luck and welcome to crappie .com

Ok Mr. Brown. I've never fished northern VA but in Southern VA big crappie have been found in water 5' deep when the temps were in the upper 40's. Water temp was 51-55 Saturday and I found a few late in the day on a sunny bank in water less than 5' deep.Quote:

Steve- Welcome to the board! I have very limited knowledge of lakes to the north of Richmond, but did have a nice day at Lake Abel (southern Stafford Co.) last October. It's a long skinny lake with some very deep water in places, lots of wood along the extensive shoreline, and many beaver huts. It's TMO and DGIF recommends 2 batteries. In a full day's fishing, I didn't make it all the way to the end.
