Ouachita Report 3-20-2009

Ouachita is still stingy with the specks.

No one is catching any of consequence. Clear, temps maxed at 59 degrees. Winds were pesky but not unbearable and probably helped the fishing.

I caught one pond* crappie and four or five spots--one of which was 15".

* a pond crappie is one that is too small for the table but just right for the pond. :D

It will come alive some day pretty soon. Lots of boats out but no one I talked to did any good.

I hit the brush piles for two hours...no go. Then I rigged for slow trollin' jigs and minnows; 12' deep in 25-30 fow on the north banks.

The spots started bustin' the water at 6:00pm and I put my crappie stuff aside long enough to boat a few and actually smell like FISH!!!

I great day otherwise. :)

Sorry they are being so stingy to ya....but glad your getting out and having some fun anyway....

...it will be more frequent than that!

I ALWAYS have a blast on the water. With the turkeys gobbling and the fish getting ready to spawn, well, I don't know of a better way to have a BALL!

Well I'm back in the frozen north of Wisconsin and miss Ouachita already.Our week was fun and we did catch some fish but overall things were a little slow.The combination of that cold front and than blue bird skies made for some tough conditions for us at least.We did get a bunch of Bass both Kentuckys and Largmouth with a few 16"-19 1/2" so those were fun.We set a trot line for a few days and caught 4 cats with one 4lbs and a nice 12lber.We did get into some big white bass hitting on the surface in the evening at the end of the week which filled our cooler.We caught 1 striper about 10lbs with those white bass so that was our weeks highlight.I also caught a Gar while fishing the whites so that was a surprise.But no Crappies.A couple old timers who seemed to know what they were doing were getting a dozen or so a day using long poles in the cedars in 18' to 25' feet of water with the fish anywhere from 3' to 8' down but we did not have those long poles and when we tried with our shorter poles it didn't work for us.Maybe next time.I will be back in mid June to try again at whatever is biting.Overall a fun week on a great lake with great weather.Good Luck

Better times are ahead...the surface temp says so. Do you do fairly well through the post-spawn over the grass beds?
