Yes they are great & accurate units but NO I don't think they will work for that as the base etrex that I am familiar with will not leave tracks/a break crumb trail, cause that's what U need on unknown waters. U need a trail to follow so U don't run aground or into stump field etc. Maybe the top priced etrex will leave a trail, U have to check. I use a 76csx & just love it.
My etrex venture leaves trax.
My etrex vista,leaves a trail.

I Have The Venture H/c And It Leaves A Trail,,u Can Even Change The Color If U Wish
I have one and it works great. I really don't use it to follow my track back. I use mine at Ky Lake or Lake Erie. I mark the launch ramp wherever I'm staying when I first get to a new lake. Usually, I stay out fishing until it's too dark to see when I quit fishing. It allows me to get back to the launch ramp with out any problems. You do have to excercise a level of caution at night just because you have limited vision and you may not be able to run a straight line to your home destination. If you're looking fo something to get you back to your starting point or to mark a few fishing spots, it's great.
