New to board/ KY Crappie question?

Hey guys and gals, im brand new to this board and i heard about it on the fishin.com board. Im planning a trip to Ky lake from april 13th to april 17Th to find some of them big slab crappie. I will be staying at the Moors resort area and plan on fishing around there and johnathan creek area,but am will to trailler boat and haul just about anywhere to find and catch fish!! I was just looking some tips and comments about these area and what types of baits and colors would be best to use. I am primarily a minnow fisherman but i do enjoy throwing the roadrunner stumpjumpers. Its been a bit since ive been down and was curious if the ice strom has put more cover in the water that can be seen or if i still need to be looking for the stump beds and stake beds. Any and all help will be greatly apprericated. thanks

go to Kentucky HydroGrafx -- Kentucky and Barkley lake maps excellent maps to order. I purchased some last year before my first trip to KY lake and they are very accurate.

Can't help you much on Ky Lake, except for telling you to look over ALL of this KDFWR study : Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources - Kentucky Lake - Crappie Movement Study
Look it over real good, print it out and take it with you ;) , and use it as a guide to movement of the fish ... as it relates to water levels, conditions, and water temps.
There's still time for some of the KY Lake experts to chime in and give you some updated info, so be looking in from time to time, to see what they've got to say.

The ice storm was particularly bad in that area, and the LBL area got hammered enough to have a lot of the campgrounds & side roads closed ... so I'd venture to say that there's some "new wood" in the lake, one way or another ;)
Minnows are always a good bet, and RR's have done me proud, on previous trips. It'll all depend on the water level/temp, as to where the fish will be ... so start shallow with the RR's and work your way out deeper until you find where they are and how deep they're holding (and what they're holding on). Figure that out, and you can probably use that same info and those same methods, on most any creek/bay in that section of the lake.

Actually, there was very little damage done around the water. It seems that the lake temperature was high enough that the warmth coming off the water keep ice from forming on the lake shores. But LBL is still mostly closed. The main road through the trace is open. Lots of damage on the side roads leading to the lake. There are a few (and I do mean few) ramps open such as Nickell Branch and Hillmans Ferry but most side road are closed and will be till further notice. I would stay on the west side of the lake and boat to where you want to fish. By the way our weather is going, you've picked a good time to come down. In the past few years, the major part of the spawn has run its course by the 17th but this year it's staying colder later so you should be alright. That is unless we get those heavy rains like we did last year.

We are going the week before you,get some air brakes on your boat,:D the wind always gets us 1 or 2 days of the week!! Get a Drift sock it may save a day fishing!!
