I hope to pour a few hundred 1/16, and 1/8 and may also do a few 1/4 with some 2/0 sickle hooks to give them a try. I have been thinking a bigger hook sure would be better. The smaller ones for me is way to small.
Anyone else doing this?

just remember that the gap on a sickle hook is about equal to the next size up, on a regular aberdeen jig hook. looks that way to my eye anyway.
Yes I believe at least one larger as a rule. Reason I like them so well. Larger bite but not longer and sharper than most other hooks.Quote:

Don't think I want to go that direction for crappie for several reasons. First is they get pretty heavy and don't think they will bend near as easy as the #4 say. I do get them back a lot when using 10# Power Pro. Next I just don't think they need to be that big unless you buy some of the 3" solid tubes and then the extra shaft length will help. More people use a big hook than you probably think.
So depends on what I am doing fishing wise, but most I will stick to a #4.

I like the bigger hooks, tends to catch them in the roof of the mouth instead of the paper thin part. Don't expect to catch any bream (though I don't want to catch bream when I'm after crappie).
I hope to give them a try on Sardis in the next few weeks. I know I had just a few 1/0 last year and 1 2/0 that I had poured for White bass with me on sardis. They did better then our normal size jigs and hooks.
So going to give them a good try this year. I found out bigger is better most days for me on crappie.

I think the sickle just looks bigger because of the shape. The ones I use match standard hook size charts. I pour some 1/8 with the 1/0 red sickle that get used a good bit on Sardis. Here's one that caught about 125 Sardis crappie last year.
