The strand count is just for larger flies/jigs. I have switched to using Embroidery floss as the cost is a lot less and it comes in hundreds of colors. Not to mention you can get rayon, silk, nylon, cotton and metallic. Endless varieties and saves money.
Use crappie Tubes you don't have to worry about tying jigs. They work great. You can get them in different colors. Red head white body for example. Good color 1-1/2inch.
But catching them on someething you made entirely yourself is GREAT!!!!!
For the floss just go to WalMart or Joannes and ask for embroidery floss they have lots of cool colors

This is a jig tying board and not a tube haven. If you use tubes in place of tying you will never feel the thrill of catching something that you made. Also I can fish with one jig all day or even two or three days with out ever changing. Do that with a tube!
I have tubes in my boat, but they just are not needed 98% of the time. I will use them and I like them, just not in the same ball park as hand tied jigs and kind of silly to compare IMHO!

I understand this to be a jig tying/jig making forum. Some people here do pour or dip plastic to use with their plain or tied jigs. Some people like to make a true custom jig from scratch and some prefer to tie only. Matter of personal choice – it can’t hurt to cover all the bases…..
I use four strand floss or single strand floss, for fly tying, to create bodies (bulks up quick) and wings. For jigs – I like to use single strand of fluorescent red in tails of my marabou jigs (for attraction and as a trademark).
I am all for pouring your own tubes and plastics too. Tougher plastic is out there and will fish as well as any other. Not to mention the color combinations you can get doing it yourself.
Sorry I confused you more DC. I buy my floss from anywhere I can get it. Stay away from DMC unless you want the fancy colors. It is not worth the triple cost compared to less expensive floss. But when it comes to metallics and other fancy colors DMC is the easiest to use and has colors you won't find in others.
