Portable Weeds?
I've seen something you can buy, pretty much weeds on a string to drop down holes wile ice fishing. These are somewhat expensive... does any one have ideas to make weeds that could be attached to flexible hose and slid over string? Any ideas are great.
Here is my thought. Ohio does not allow dropping structure, thought I could make portable temporary to take with me. Large weight at bottom of string, weeds placed on string (somehow) and float set to depth of water with extra string to throw. Could throw 4 or 5 in from shore and have some weeds to fish by and pull out at end of day. ...Thoughts?

I don't think using the weeds for a day will do much for you. It's a shame that the State won't allow you to improve the habitat for the future of your fisheries. Any structure needs to be in long enough to grow algae and attract minnows that will bring in the bigger fish.

Well, maybe so, maybe not?? The lake I mostly want to do this at is 80 some acre upground res with nothing but boulder rip-rap banks - no wood cover anywhere. Entire lake is perfectly flat mud bottom, 25' deep and very very clear with NO weeds. You pretty much have to keep constantly moving to catch fish. Best thing - most days fishing can catch 10 or more crappie and not have one under 11". I've seen large groups of sunnies swim along right below trash that is blowing across the surface of the water. Makes me think if I could get something out there, some roamers may stop to check it out? Gonna give it a shot this spring/summer, will post if I get some results.
Checked into buying plastic aquarium plants from a large pet store, but all were too small and way too expensive. Gonna try the craft store, but if not gonna make somethin??
Thanks for the honesty Fishordie :)

I wouldn't waste my time and money on that. The fish will not have time to aclimate to the situation. Just my two-cent's worth.

Thanks guys, like the truth, just hope I can prove ya wrong! :p I came up with a plan, have got 4 or 5 plastic cat litter containers that I am gonna cut into 12"-16" strips, spray paint green... just need to fig how to attach to string.
Don't have the money to waste, using kite string and other junk in basement, only gotta buy the spray paint. I've got plenty of time, 6"-10" of ice on any lake nearby and don't see it going away anytime soon! If anything, I'll drill some extra holes and drop em through the ice. ;)
Thanks - Russ

I say give it a shot. It doesn't really sound like a great idea to me, but you never know... it sure won't hurt to try it.

if you have crappies in the area that already roam, then this is a fine idea. i read a testimonial regarding the reel weeds set up from a guy here locally. when ice fishing the area would be packed with anglers. one area would be catching fish while there was a lull wiht everyone else, then the ball of crappie would just basically move around and everyone would catch fish. he used the reel weeds and set up a triangle pattern, kept the holes hidden in his shanty, and he said that while others still caught fish, he was catching ffish non stop and doubled his previous best. and it was the case for the rest of the ice season this year. many crappie stopped moving in the school and just hung out in the weeds.

Thanks guys... I have heard of this for ice fishing, still working on a way that will withstand getting thrown out a distance and make it back in at the end of the day. First attempt with the plastic strips rivited together didn't work... Saw one of my kids swimming noodles in the shed and wondered if I could use that???
I have thought of the ivy stuf, have a hobby store nearby that I think sells the stuff buy the foot, but not sure how sturdy it is. Will check it out though.
