Oldwun or anyone elses input

Wanted to drive up and pick your brain on a trolling motor and fish finder. Got $1000.00 burning my pocket that the wife has given me a green lite on for my birthday Feb-12. Everyone please give me their opinion. This is the area I am the weakest in and I feel it hurts my chances of catch more crappie. You must remember as far as the sonar goes it must have a manuel for dummies I'm just not good with this stuff. I'm like from Missouri show me and I can do it but reading instructions and picking up what they say is different. Thanks Tenncrappie.

Humminbird 797c2 SI Combo If it's on bottom you'll see it. Fished with a guide on KY Lake last spring and it was awesome to say the least.

I guess the best question for me to ask is what style of fishing are you doing/looking to do? The reason why I ask, is that if you do a lot of bobber fishing, kentucky rigging, or jigging brush piles, the side imaging is tough to beat. You can spend the whole grand on that depth finder, and possibly double your catch from last year. The type of trolling motor really wouldn't matter too much, because you'd be either anchored down, or staying confined to one small area.

Now, if you're planning on long line trolling, using planer boards, or even slow trolling, getting a good trolling motor w/ autopilot would be the better investment. eBay Motors: MINN KOTA FR MODEL 55PD V2/AP-48" AUTOPILOT WARRANTY (item 390014241700 end time Feb-01-09 12:56:47 PST)

With the money you have left over, you can get a decent depth finder w/ gps, or invest in some good quality rod holders.

Based on the type of fishing I do, if I had $1000 to spend, I'd get the trolling motor w/ autopilot, sell the trolling motor and depth finder that I have currently, put another $200 with it and then buy the side imaging.......then I'd go straight to the ER to find out what was wrong with me, cuz if the wife is giving me the green light to spend a $1000 on fishing, I must not have much time left here!!!:D:D:D

Here is where I stand. In the spring (On Chickamauga) when the water starts warming the fish start moving into the shallows and using the plainner boards and trolling you can catch your limit everyday unless some weather issue that muddys the water up or something (storm) prevent you getting on the water. After the spawn and when they move to deeper water and later in the summer when the lake temps get 75-85 degree water temps is when I strike out. This is when I want to go to then next level and what ever it takes I'm willing to spend to a point. I've got it bad guys I can't wait for 4 yrs and retirement and be parked on the lake like Booger everyday. So fire away if anyone cares to share with this lifelong hillbilly I'd greatly appreciate it.

In my humble opinion, it sounds as if you'd benefit more from a trolling motor w/ autopilot and the co-pilot remote....and spending the rest on a traditional depth finder w/ built in gps.

Also, since you mentioned retirement, I have to assume that like Crappietime, you're over the age of 41 :D and that small screen on that 797C2 might not be too good for the old eyes. Your best move might be to take whatever you have left over, buy Mrs Tenncrappie something nice for Valentine's day, and use those brownie points as credit so you can upgrade to that Humminbird 1197 next year!!!:eek::D:eek:

I would say to purchase a good tm with the money. Save up for a better ff. All the pros will tell you, boat control is the key to catching more fish. I recommend the Terrova from mk. It's well worth the money. Puchased mine from Marine Electronics & Fishing Equipment, Buy Humminbird, Raymarine & Garmin Fishfinders, Handheld GPS, Chartplotters, Radios, Radars & Autopilots Online. They gave me a great deal when i purchased a tm and ff together. Hope this helps.
