My 1st attempts at tying jigs

ok the 1st pic is some of the worsts so far.i just cut the thread on the 1st few and started over with same jigs so i don't have the really retarded ones here. the second is some of the better looking ones . half are tied with some old jig heads i had stuffed in tackle box if the hooks look corroded. i got a mold and some hooks on the way to pour some new heads in a few weeks.

You are getting there. Are you sealing your thread bodies? Out here we have "wet n wild" brand of fingernail polish that make several different types of clear coat. I use the clear and a "no chip" over coat. It does get easier...

Very nice start. Better than my first ones looked. I wish I started with jigs because the streamer fly I was tying was a lot more trouble to learn with right off the bat.

Keep tying them and fish them, find what catches fish best and work off that.

Great beginning! Now do what most of us do, through all in a bucket and start over. Keep one or two ever once in a while to measure your progress bye. Its fun to stumble across something you tried years ago and see the improvement and get a good laugh.

Ain't this fun.

we all start at the bottom and work our way up...I wish you could have seen my first jig.....ah....no I don't...it was awfull. At least you could fish your first and not go hungry....keep at it......it gets better all the time...and these folks in here have alot of tips to speed up the learning curve. We all need more practice; thats why we tie a whole lot more than we will ever use and we change styles every other week. The main goal....have fun doing it and the rest is gravy.......brim

I would say you can catch fish on those they look good for you first one you should have seen my first jigs neck was bigger around then the head I figured the more thread the better....

Welcome from Alabama. IMHO let your tails be natural and free flowing than "Cut off " in a line. Here are some videos that may be of benefit to you.

Some small suggestions:
First, don't try to use thread to color up the jig, use anything that can be wrapped around the hook to give color. A uniform wrap gives a fly/jig a nice look and allows you to finish it off with very little thread. This will also save you money because thread can become expensive quickly. I also suggest getting fly master plus 140 denier thread for strength.

But don't give up one your pattern! If you find a tweak you can make that catches fish or find a tail length that works better or whatever, you have to fish them to find it!

Another thing to do it to go out and find patterns on line and try to copy them. It is not illegal to do it. Pick a simple pattern and copy it or try to if you have the materials to do so.

I will actually try this one myself, might be my swap jig with a small adjustment. I would do my crochet for the body instead of a simple wrap.

A really inexpensive material is to go to a craft store and buy embroidery floss. You get a ton of it for under a $1 and it comes in hundreds of colors.

These jigs are tied using an all thread body and a couple of clear coats (some with glitter) using fingernail polish.
