Trolling Motor Props??

Often wondered why with trolling motors, one size. (PROP) fits all. Seems to me someone would have a niche for the market it they made specialty TM props.

We can buy just about any prop for our big motor, but are pretty limited in prop size when it comes to trolling motors.

I know you can cut them down in size, and produce less thrust (thus less speed) as I have done this before. Be nice to be able to just buy TM prop that suites your needs.

If I remember the TM props are designed (optimized) to provide max thrust and speed. I can't recall for sure.

Just think, a prop could fix the slow troll speed. Most just go to fast.

I might be peeing up a rope here too.:o

I guess we could snap off a blade and slow it down 50%?

cane pole, I'm with you. Why is it if we want it to work the way we want it we have to modify it? I took the prop off my 40# mk troll motor and shaved an inch off it in the lathe so low would be low on jon boat works great now.

I think it probably has to do with them picking a prop that will keep motors from smoking on whatever boat they are on. Big heavy boats could cause excessive current draw if the prop was too big, while a light boat could use the same motor and prop with no problem.

Since most owners don't have a way to monitor what the motor draws, it's easier for the manufacturers to limit choices.

This is true, but a 30 dollar plastic prop is a lot cheaper than a 200 dollar motor speed control (add on).

I often wonder why Minn Kota or Motorguide haven't introduced a Kort thrust nozzle type Trolling Motor. They are far more efficient than the open blade model. Also wonder why they haven't introduced the brushless motor. Cost doesn't seem to factor into anything anymore. Look at sonar.:)

I believe some folks call this design (Kort) a rock guard. :eek:

Just came across a note I made to myself to look into this. Just been a little behind since December :p

Came across this site MAKING A MODIFIED CORT NOZZLE FOR SMALL AUXILLARY MOTORS which I found interesting not because of his results, but because of his willingness to try it.

I recall metal trolling motor blades available years ago. I think they were for more thrust instead of less. A trolling motor repair shop told me the metal ones were too strong and would cause interior damage if you hit something, whereas the plastic ones would bend or break before causing interior damage.
