Does anybody know what needs to be done in order to preserve bucktail. I'm a whitetail hunter and take several deer each year. I'd like to save the tails for my crappie jigs. Is there anything that needs to be done other than cutting it off the deer and stuffing it in a ziplock bag?:D
Boraxo and baking soda mixture will dry it out and prevent it from rotting.
I have been boning them out then covering them with salt. After 2 days I change out the salt. After another 2 days I remove salt and cover with Boraxo laundry soap.
Cut the tail to remove the bone. Then salt and Borax.

I just put them in a plastic bag and freeze them, bone in. If I want to tie some little bucktails, just take one out as long as I'm tying, then put it back in the freezer. Thats my way of getting around the extra work of deboning them etc.
