I just recently upgraded an old eagle finder to a humminbird 777c2 and love it. it shows structure and fish soooo much easier/better. Plus it has a color LCD screen, easy menus, etc. I love it.
The eagles are really good entry level graphs...thats what I have. The 640c would be a good one...thats in that price range. The Lowrance 510c is a little pricer but still nice. I don't know about the humminbirds. Good luck!!
Humminbird 580c. It's about $350.
something else that may be helpful...google humminbird, eagle, and lowrance emulators....these are normally downloadable and will allow you to play with features, buttons, functions, etc... on each unit you download...gives a good representation of the unit. Its just like using the simulator on the real unit...without acutally having the unit.
Eagle's download page:

Lowrance download page:
Product Emulators | Lowrance
do not know humminbird's but do a search and you can find it. Just download to your desktop, install and start pushing buttons...great try before you buy setup. Good luck!
thanks scraper great info.
I recently bought a Lowrance X96 for $199 at Gander Mountain and I am extremely pleased with it. It is not color but it has like 16 shades of gray and the detail is amazing.
Just make sure that you get a dual beam.
here is another good comparison web site, you can compare by brand
