Here is a picture of a bamboo condo my son and i built. its quite tall as you can see. It seems to hold a few fish. do you guys think that the holes in the lake bottom on the left side are crappie beds, or what?

I'll bet that the spots on the bottom are a hard clay bottom that is a little uneven. I don't think is is gravel and chunk rock. I was wading out from our dock and felt the bottom as I went and it felt like that picture looks.

First it looks like fish may be in condo about 2/3 way up guess about 12 feet from bottom. Second the top of pict is where the boat/ducer was located. Those dark spots on bottom which may appear as holes are really sonar shadows as they are downwind? of the ducer. Shadows are probably from low weed growth on bottom, I think if they were rock there would show up a whiter hard bounce signal on top of shadow. Also right side of lake bottom has a slight rise & is harder surface. Just my 2 cents. Is that pict reversed?
next time out freeze that pict then turn sensitivity down a couple say from 8 to 6, or 6 to to 4 or 3. You will change pict as U do this remember fish are white as are rocks etc.
That's one cool pic. right there. Those SI units are amazing. Makes you want one even if the GPS is terrible.

Thanks jax for the reply. This bottom is all mud, no grass, at least not any my two anchors have ever pulled up. I have ran over some beds before that you could actually see the fish in them. I didn't see any in these, so i thought they may be old beds. I did crop the picture, but didn't reverse it. What will turning the sensitivity down do for the picture? I'm still learning how to operate the 997 as i don't get to go very often. thanks again.Quote:

If those little holes were in much shallower water, I'd say for certain that they were bream beds. Bream beds look like that on the SI unit. The pic looks like an 800 KHZ shot. Looks like the condo is doing it's job.... Nice work.

I think we are all still learning so join the crowd----The sensitivity is just like the Contrast/maybe brightness control on a black & white Tv. BY turning it down that soft bottom will look a little darker give U more contrast & make a fish really stand out. I don't want(me) the soft bottom/mud to be white I want the fish, turtles, structure to be a white or off white so they stand out. I want to see the sonar shadows as defined as possible that gives me some idea how tall/large the structure is. Yes I move my sensitivity setting depending on lake, mud/rock/gravel etc. & if I am looking at bottom or shooting a dam or large rock built shore. I don't think I am ever over 6/7 on 997, if that, but U be the judge that why I said to shoot same pict & freeze it then change your sensitivity several times looking at same pict cause even tho its froze the pict contrast will change- see what setting U like best. ;)Quote:

That side-scan is just amazing. One day I might just have to spring for one. Forget the gps. I have my Garmin that gives me the BEST in gps. :)
