tying on material?

Hello
Started tying Jigs about 6-7 months ago? anyway 1 Thing I've noticed is that when I tie the material on I start wrapping the thread around I try to keep the neck very narrow but always seems to be a little wider then I like when done. Is this because my tension is to tight and it is sliding back? and if so why? I start the thread like it shows in the videos. The Jigs still look ok and I can't pull the material out when done and I tested they do catch fish!! But I still would like to have a smaller neck of thread. any help would be great.

You may have too much material your trying to tye.This will force the thread back away from the head.You only need enough to cover the hook.

I'm not sure what kind of material you are tying on, but if it's a thread neck feather jig or a thread neck marabou jig, here is what I do when a minimal size neck is wanted. When you first tie the feathers on, start pretty close to the head, like 1/16 or so and try not to wrap back towards the hooks bend, keep it forwards of that point, but when you get right behind the head where your feathers are cut off, wrap with minimal tension while building the thickness you want, otherwise the wedging action of a tite tension will separate the thread neck even further from the head. using the right thread for the job also helps. you will find your pet thread through experimentation. Also using a little head cement under your feathers before you tie in, and also before you whip finish, allows you to use minimal thread while still mantaining strength. hope this helps ps. I tend to use stronger threads than alot of people, so I can wrap with more tension, which also helps things stay put
