Which type jig head should I use for tying jigs? Barbed or ball head.
Sorry oldwon, not enough information. What are you fishing for?
Just for information, I tie 1/80 oz. calf tail jigs for my own use. I use round ball head (no collar)on mostly #8 bronze jig hooks. I also use some of the same on red #10 hooks. I target bluegill, and these both work well for me. Mike
Thanks to the many people on this forum I started tying jigs last year and now use Ball Heads in a 1/32 oz. with #6 hook and 1/16 oz. with #4 hook.I am really enjoying this new found hobby.
ball heads is what I am now using. someone told me the barbed jigs worked better.
Len,
You can't go wrong with ball heads and no collar. Keep a supply of 1/16, 1/32nd, 1/64th, and you will be in great shape for crappies. You can also add 1/80th if you fish 'Gils a lot....otherwise a 1/64th will work on the 'Gills. Sometimes I even take pliers and pinch the barb down to make them easier to get out of wood snags. If you don't get hung up a few times you probably are not fishing enough cover. Keep up the great work.
No barb round heads. Check out my how to tie bucktails thread, that's the only time I use collared heads. And even then they're not barbed, just collared. It doesn't look right without the collar on larger jigs, but for 1/8th oz down to 1/80th oz, I only use no collar round heads when tying chenille body as well as kiptail jigs.
I use both. Tie hair jigs 1/80 and up on the collard heads, and use the non- collard for when i use chennile body jigs, 1/80 oz. and up.
The reason that i like to use the collard jigs for the hair, is that i think it gives them a fuller body. Kip tail and Craft go on the collard.
Every jig I tie is on a ball head no collar.
