My imagination, or was it advertised that the NVB units would
some day be able to be updated with more current maps?
I'm soon-to-be owner of one, and would like to get it up to '08
mapping some day.
Also, in this unit (797 NVB) can I use my '08 Nav card in it if I want to?
Show my card data instead of the built-in stuff?
Think so, but never know till you ask. Thanks.

To my knowledge you will not be able to update the (06) NVB map set in the NVB models. But here is another example, If you purchase a NVB model and in 2010 you wanted the any new information that Navionics has put out. All you will have to do is buy a new Navionics card insert it into the unit and the new information will overlay the information that is in the unit so you will not loose anything. You will only gain the new information that is on the card between 06 map set and when you purchase the new Navionics card.
Hopefully I answered both of your questions in the statement above.

Ok, appreciate the straight answer on the upgrade -
I could've swore they used to plug them as upgradable.
Like I said, oh well. I'm buying it for the SI anyhow, not the GPS.
Already have a non-NVB 787 I will use for that.
Reason I asked at all, is that I have seen myself, on the water, that if you are on a lake, or section of a lake, that in not on the '06
maps, you are better off with the built in unimap.
Case in point, McDougall branch on Bay Springs -
On my friends 997 NVB, it does not even show it as water - it just cuts
it off, like the end of the world dropping off or something.
But my unimap on 787 shows at least the outline of the cove,
and of course it's fine on my '08 premium south card, in 1' contour lines.
Maybe it's just a glitch, maybe I shouldn't complain - but the way I look
at it, that comes with it - charge $650-1200 or more for something,
the expectations are gonna be higher ;)
