Jerry/Darrel, what is the fish finder and GPS that you use on your boat. I know that the Humminbird has to be "GPS Ready" to have a seperate hand held GPS unit.
Has anyone tried the combo units? I was looking at the 580c, and it looks like it has everything that I need.

I use a Garmin Map76Cx for getting back to my condos. I have a 12-volt adapter permanently plugged into a 12-volt receptacle (came with an electric knife) under my front deck and I have a Marine Mount to hold the GPS.
I use a Humminbird 797c2 SI with a shoot-through the hull transducer mounted near the front of the boat and angled slightly toward the side we fish on. I also have an SI transducer mounted on my trolling motor and a Y-cable so the downward sonar uses the shoot-through the hull transducer and not the SI transducer. The Garmin and the Humminbird are not connected.
I also have a Lowrance LCX27c mounted on my console on a swivel so I can turn it towards the front when crappie fishing. It's transducer is mounted on the transom, also on the side we fish on. It has a pretty good "Enhanced Lake Map" for Lake Greeson (a free download) that comes in real handy when looking for points, drop-offs, creek channel bends and other structures we want to put cover on or troll over.
Everything Jerry said plus I think you will prefer a separate handheld like the 76 over using the gps on the sonar unit itself. One, the handhelds seem to be more accurate and two, you don't want to use up some of your sonar screen space with gps when viewing sonar. Toggling the screens is a pain and I want to see both at the same time all the time.

Jerry, which Lowrance did you have when Texas Jimmy & I were out there???.It was not color but had great definition...Does the 27 do as good a job as far as seeing fish in a brushpile as your old unit...And, can you see the color with sunglasses?

I am looking at it for the front of the boat. I like the big screen and I like Lowrance stuff. I believe the underwater definition is better than that of Humminbird.

Now that I've been using color graphs it would be real hard to go back to gray scale. Adjusting the sensitivity seems to be even more important on the color units though. Too much sensitivity and most everything is the same color.
