Wondering if the 17 year swarm of (cicadae???) would be good bait for anything biting?
because I've never used them. I have heard that Bass will take them off the surface, and I'm sure Catfish would scarf on them. This may be more true around waters where the swarm occurs :confused:Quote:

They make great bait. We just caught a lot of small to average channel cats and bluegill at T-ville. Fished for crappie all of about 15 minutes (caught one short fish on a jig) then switched to fishing the banks with cicadas and minnows. It was a ton of fun on ultralight takle. Also caught three carp (4 to 7 pounds). They weren't crappie but I enjoyed it.

He got the gills from Lake Cumberland.He fished with me on Green and we got 32 crappie on Wednesday.We have been catching some nice crappie the last few weeks on Green.

We saw tons of cicadas fluttering on the water's surface on Sunday morning. I would have expected the bass to come up and hit them, but didn't see anything like that. I'm surprised to hear that bluegill will eat them, they seem way to big to fit in a bluegills mouth.
How do you present them as bait? Is it a hook, sinker, and float approach, or just let them flutter on top?

We used slipfloats set about 2 feet deep with a couple of split shot and a number 4 aberdeen hook. Hook the cicada from the neck down through the torso and out the tail. The fish seemed to prefer the tail/abdomen section but would also hit just the head with wings still attached.
What would be the best way to freeze them? In a container with water or maybe in a freezer bag without water? Just curious.
