OK, I am pricing this all out to see what it will cost to get started. If I am leaving anything out or have an overkill on anything feel free to voice your opinion. If there is something better or something to consider I would like to explore those options before purchasing.

This is similar to the type of jigs I would like to make. Someone emailed me this the other day. I am unsure of the materials used.

I believe that the jigs that you are looking at have Krystal Flash in them you may want to get you several colors of that.

Those are some great looking crappie jigs. Those look like kip or cow tail jigs. Yes, that is Krystal flash. It is used to imitate fish scales.

Start with one or two proven designs that will catch Crappie and Bream and then branch out and experiment from there.

All crappies will hit a 1/32 or 1/64 ounce jig or a #4 or #6 hook. (Minnow or Wolly Worm) Master the basic marabou / feather jig and it will always get you bit. Add the wooly bugger or wolly worm styles and your hobby will take off and be real enjoyable for you.

Those jigs use Krystal Flash and Kiptail. The price of the thread doesn't seem right Though. You should be able to get Danville Flat waxed thread for $1.25 not $2.99.

Check out www.jsflyfishing.com for a good selection on tying supplies with some good prices. Also www.barlowstackle.com and www.jannsnetcraft.com are good places too.

Those jigs are kip tail jigs. Infact they are made by the guy i get my supplies from. He makes some absolute wicked small mouth jigs with craw patterns. If you go to ebay i think his are slab slayer jigs. Might want to get a second job cause you will bleed for them =). I have seen many times his jigs go for 14.00+ a dozen and have seen times he got more than that. Are they worth it? Yeah they will catch you fish thats for sure. I just wish i could that much out of mine.

the only thing i have ever said that improve the look of his jigs is stop making the bodies look like a super model and give it some thickness. His necks are scrawny. ;)

From one beginner to another--
I just bought several standard bobbins from Jann's netcraft, 249 each , and they
are working just fine. I bought a bunch of marabou, and now I find I like the
hair jigs much better.
don't need the bobbin threader if you have some fine wire. Just take 6 inches and
bend it double.
don't need the whip finish tool. easy to do with your fingers If you have ever
snelled hooks , it is the same motion. Or just finish with a few half-hitches.

the pictured jigs have no chennille, the necks are thread only. I am beginning
to think that is the way to go.

I bought jigheads from TJ Crenshaw, with collars and barbs, I just mash the
barb down and tie to the collar. Works for me better than tying to a hookshank.

I've spent about $120 on supplies and I already had the vise. I will upgrade the vise
soon , as mine doesn't rotate, and I'm getting tired of turning the jig over manually.

When you guys tie a jig like the above pictured where there is two distinct color hair used, how do you add the hair? Two seperate tyings or one? If two sererate like I suspect how do you put hair on so it doesn't intermingle much. Looks like one color put on the back and one color put on underside. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

As I've said , I am a beginner. What I do is start with one color, (on top) wrap it up tight tie it off with a couple of half hitches , then turn the jig over and tie the contrasting color.
I like chartruse on top and orange on bottom , I think this matches a perch, brim,
bream,( depending on where you live).
I also like to put a small amount of marabou over hair. I'm not sure why , just looks
good to me.
