Don't laugh at me, but I am putting this on a jon boat. I mostly bluegill and bass fish but really want to get into crappie. Did I mention that I only have trolling motors, What is the best way to mount this? Is there any way to watch what you have recorded on the computer? Also any tips and info would be appreciated. How long is the cord for the ducer? I am wanting to put it on the back and the unit up front. Only a 14 footer.

There is a new software conversion you can down load off Humminbird that will let you export a recording on it to generic file version that's suppose to run on a couple different viewers for that. Yellow Fin I think is one. You can check it out at

As for cord length, its not over long but they do have extensions if I remember right. Be sure to join the users site on Yahoo too.

If you mount it to the trolling motor, some times they will cause interference if the TM isn't grounded well. They can give you all the poop on that over there.

Hmmmm, I'm not sure exactly what you're planning but:
RAM mount that puppy with a 1.5" ball as far as physical attachment of the unit to the hull.
Now, from what I understand, you need to be travelling 2-5 mph for the SI to be effective - I think the optimum is right at 3 mph. The ducer will need to be placed on the transom and not the TM.
What I can't picture is whether your TM is mounted at the back or the front or both. If at the back, you won't be able to see the front mounted FF. If at the front, will you be able to achieve the speed? I can see it working with a TM at the back and one at the front for steering.
You're also going to want to mount a traditional ducer on the TM with a switch for 2D graphing.
Maybe I'm making this more complicated than it really is. ? I'm pretty good at that. LOL.

Newblade, you think you have it bad.... A friend of mind has a jon boat with not only 997but a 1197 on the front..... Now has that... 5000 dolars of electronic's... lol and you can never have enough stuff....
newblade...putting them on a jon boat is completely acceptable! I put a 997 on the transom and a 787ci on the bow this spring for a total of 3000.00!! The one thing I will tell you about the transducer is if you mount it even with the bottom of the boat (as recommended for stepped bass boat hulls) you might get bubble interference from the sides of the boat cutting through the water. This will show up on the outside of your SI screen if its too high and picking up wake from the edge of your boat. I had to lower mine to about an inch (they are adjustable up and down) below the bottom and between strakes. This can put the transducer in harms way for sure...but I want it to work...so I deal with it. They are a pain to get right but once you do get it right its a tremendous tool. To give you an idea of how sensative they are....if a boat passes by....motor out to where it passes and you will see a distinct cloud of bubbles from its wake.

Hi warren, as far as recording from 997 I was told by some on this site that the yellowfin does not work with 997 if you already have upgraded to the 4.180 new/update which I did.
