Just back in from Reelfoot tonight.Been fighting the wind all week.Blew from the Northeast yesterday and the the Northwest today.Lake was calming down abouth 4PM this afternoon when i left.Fish bit good when i got to fish, but there were times when you just could not stay out there.Had South winds earlier in the week and the bite was good for both bluegill and crappie.I had 26 crappie and 40 bluegill wednesday.I started out jigging with a grizzly jig in Cunningham color tipped with a waxworm. After catching several monster gills along with a couple of good crappies i switched to a chartruse grizzly tipped with the waxworms.I started smoking the crappie then.I went out early the next morning and caught 16 more crappie before the wind got to high to stay. The east and north wind turned them off in the trees. The weather will be cold tonight in west Tn.Low in the high 40's,mid 70's tomorrow with some wind.I left a day early because i was tired from trying to hold the boat in the wind. The fish are holding tight to the trees.Put your jig up tight next to the trees and you will find the fish. Most of the time only one fish or maybe two per tree.Just keep moving to the next tree. All mine were caught fishing 3.5 ft.deep in 4 to 4.5ft of water.I'm talking about crappie, the bluegill are even shallower.I lost tuesday with motor trouble (power pack died).Monday and today were rough weather days with very few caught. If you want bluegill fish a black jig with a white head tipped with a waxworm. The crappie like the chartruse better. The crappie were mostly good sized fish and still had eggs inside.I culled a few small fish less than 9 inches. All in all considering the weather i had a decent trip.I figure 2.5 days of good weather out of 5.The bluegill were some of the largest i've seen in a long time. The North end of the lake is a perfect spot for the fish right now.The more trees the better the fishing.
i appreciate it alot. were you fishing the upper, miidle or lower basin. we plan on fishing out of the air park but are willing to go anywhere. i had a buddy that caught several at greys camp but that was two weeks ago. again we really appreciate the information.
I started out Monday in the lower Blue Basin pushing minnows for crappie in 10 to 14 ft water.I was picking up a fish now and then around 6 ft. deep. However the wind quickly put a stop to that approach. After having the motor problem and having the rig in the shop all day tuesday,i then went to the trees out from Samburg on wednesday morning.I stayed there all day and fished it again early thursday before being blown out by the wind and rain. The area was producing fish and i stayed with it as long as i could. The trees are impossible to jig around in high winds.I had plans of going back into the Rat Island area and also the Kirby Pocket area along with the Upper Blue Basin but the weather kept me from doing so.I did see a couple of guys dressing a cooler full of monster gills that they said were caught around the trees out from Gray's Camp on the upper end.As i said in the earlier post, anywhere there are cypress trees you should find fish.Fish slowly and you should fill your cooler.
been awhile since my lsat post but went to the foot today and brought home a few crappie and about 8 nice gill. wind was bad right off the bat and I got there early. ended up in a slough west of kirbys pocket to get out of the wind and thats where most of the fish came from. had a fun boat ride back to the truck the water was ROUGH !!!!. going back on tuesday afternoon hope it is better.
keep going west on the ditch past Starve pond If you go west out a ways into the next basin (I don't know what it is called), keep going until you clear the cypress and then turn north and get in them pads. We were there two weeks ago and the gills were just getting ready to spawn, it looked like. Then last Sunday we had the weather, I was back monday and the fish were not there anymore, after the cold front and resulting high pressure. So we went to the trees north of Kirby pocket and did pretty good. The crappies were on the trees more out in the open. The bluegill were in the trees. We caught em with black and green grizzly jigs the best.
