I never have used wax worms or maggots for panfish. What do size hook or jig do you put them on if you have to cast and retrieve. I fish out my kayak alot and still get blown around in 180's when anchored, so I guess a small jig would work best.

Your best bet is get a #0 or #1 popeye and tip it with either.White&black,Red&black are my favorite color's.Any 1/80th oz jig with #6 hook or smaller will work as a bluegill is not very picky.
Everyone has a favorite way of using waxies. I happen to like tipping a 1/80 oz .kiptail jig with a wax worm.
I am also quite particular how I put a wax worm on a hook. I hook them right at the very tail tip of the worm, then with a slight tug I roll the worm a bit between my fingers and hook it again through the body. This helps a little when there are bait stealing dinks in the area.
Just yesterday I was on an agressive bite with large gills. In that case I just hooked the tip of the tail once to get the movement that turns them on.
Two waxies tip hooked brought the very largest to hand.
I also use a slip float to keep the jig at the depth that is working best for me that day.

I use 14's and 16's for maggots. I don't use waxies much, but a #12 will be about right.
One more question for this old thread.
I am going to be fishing out of an anchored kayak in a small river this weekend. If I use one of the micro jigs (1/80th oz) tipped with a waxie, can I just put a small slpit shot about 10 inches up to cast in the wind? Or can I use a little floater for weight with a very slow retrieve?

With a kayak you can alter the method a lot. I have put the shot as high as 4' with my 8 1/2 rod. to get that slow fall of the jig and still have the use of the float. The kayak as my float tube allow for that "up colse" fishing. Mike

I'd use a waggler and split shot about 8 inches above the jig.
A float or a waggler will be the best bet. I like to use ice fishing jigs and tip those with a waxie or a spike (maggot). But just a plain hook hook will work.
