Green River 5/4/2008 Report - Holmes Bend
Couldn't decide where to go yesterday, beautiful day, but the winds were from the NE, hated to not take a chance on getting some fishing in. So after great debate, we decided to goto Green River, we got there about 5 PM or a bit later, we put in a Holmes Bend, & headed to the right from the dock. We started to fish a few points, but the wind was so gusty, that didn't last long. We ended up in a cove & caught a few small bluegills & a crappie or 2.
We were using minnows. I put on a rooster tail just to see what would happen, & started getting some hits on it, I caught a few small bass & bluegills, the gills look to be full of eggs. I left a minnow trailing in about 5 feet of water with a floater as we trolled around a bit. We ended up catching a couple of bass, bluegills, shell crackers, & sunfish on the rooster tails. Not sure of the water temp, we did see the Fish & Wildlife Men, & they said we were about 2 weeks early. Alot of people are catching crappie, but they don't have much size to them.
As the day wore on, I ended up hooking a nice channel catfish, probably 2 lbs., and we found a few crappie moving in to feed near the edge of dark. We ended up with the cat, one 9 1/2 crappie, & a nice bluegill. (bluegill was caught on a minnow)
Actually, experienced a first, I caught a small to medium size bluegill on a minnow & threw him back, then my cousin was fishing with a minnow & caught a bluegill, it had the minnow in it's mouth from when I caught it. It was small & just had the tail of mine sticking out of it's mouth & hit his right after that, I wish I had taken a camera.
We caught about 30 crappie, small, 5-8 inches, with the one keeper, wind was rough on the main lake but wasn't too bad off the main drag. I knew better than to go fishing w/o some worms, but I did, & I'd say we could have had a nice catch of bluegill, shell crackers, & sun fish with some worms or crickets.
The bass were feeding heavy on water bugs that were bunched up near the banks. We caught about 6 bass, none keeper size.
We had fun thought & that's the main thing.
Also, I seen on the Fish & Wildlife Website an advisory for Fish Consumption of Channel Catfish from Green River Lake for PCBs, I'm a bit skiddish of eating the channel cat we caught, what's everyone else's opinion? Eat or not to Eat, that is the question.
