Maps
If you are only fishin rivers you should check the navionics maps for your area to see if they are on there
I bought the maps with mine -- [would,nt do it again]it prolly would help if you were selling your unit--I had a 2008 chip for another plotter,so I,m using it instead of the nvb,s---[they are 2006]
You will have to have one or the other in to use the unit---hope this helps

Maybe over simplified, NVB maps give you a very broad coverage with very generic maps. Like Frank said, ckeck see if the lakes or rivers you fish are covered by Navionics newest cards.

I bought mine without nvb and use it without any chip. I just use the base map built in it. The map built in is not very accurate though. I have alot of waypoints set in 4 foot water and the map shows me out on the bank. Don't bother me cause I still know when I floating or walking.

I bought mine without nvb for several reasons-nvb is 2006 model maps, did not cover many of local Illinois waters I fish , and no way to up date nvb maps except for just going out & buying a new map chip & unit will use the newest map(it knows). 997 has 2 chip slots so U can have a map chip & a SD card for picts at same time, no problem. The 797 has only one slot so here NVB may prove to be more critical? Both Warren & Frank always offer good side find info. Also if U just want Cabela's always puts some of Nav's map series on sale at end of year Dec thru Feb.
