Ok i'm new to fish finders.Gonna get one soon.My ? about water temp.I will be mounting transducer on trolling motor.TM is only about 8-10" under water.So the temp I will be see is water temp for 8-10" deep or what?Say I was fishing 15-20' deep & wanted to know the temp down there? how do you do it?Thanks for any help in advance.
Yes, you are correct. The temp displayed is the temp at the transducer. The only way to get a temp reading down that deep would be to get a probe with a long cable that you can lower to that depth. Can't think of anyone that makes something like that (digital), but I'm sure it can be had.
Poor man's solution would be an acquarium thermometer tied to a weight with a piece of rope marked for depth. Trouble is, you'd have to leave it at a certain depth for a period to let the thermometer adjust to that temp.

Knowing the surface temp is a great advantage. That is the first thing I check when I get in the boat in the springtime. Somtimes just finding a little warmer water can make a big differance in your catch.
I would go ahead and get the temp with the transducer....they are valuable and like bowhunter said, a little temp change will make a difference
Definitely get a ducer with the temp. Worth their weight in gold from time to time......such as right now for example. :)
Depending on your budget, here's what I like in black and white - Eagle 320, Eagle 480, Color - Eagle 320C, Lowrance 520C without the GPS puck, or if you want to jump to GPS just add the puck or you can add it later. All have temp reading ducers available. Course the price goes up with each model listed, but any of these will serve you well, well, well. Others will recommend the H'birds which are great units, I just don't have direct experience with the more recent models.
