Rosey Reds

I used Rosey Reds yesterday and I must say in the muddy water I got more bites and faster bite times with rosey reds than regular minnows. I can't wait till the water clears to test them further. Anyone using them?

I have been using Rosey reds for the last couple years, your observations match mine exactly. It seems they outperform the regular fathead minnows by at least 5 to 1. I purchase mine from Fast Eddies bait at Little Johnathan. I think the color and their ability to stay alive much longer are the reasons for their success. In the 3rd week of March we fished them and I had several stay alive for hours when hooked thru the lips. Unfortunately the crappie were in lockjaw mode when we were there. I stumbled on them several years back when they were out of regular minnows. We slayed them that day and that other boat with us fished exactly the same places, same depth and only caught 3. We gave them some and they ended up with 30 fish in a little over 5 hours. Now we dont hit the water without them.

Back when the FLW was Operation Bass and headquartered at Moors, when they would feed the fish in the aquarium they would occasionally mix in a number of goldfish with the regular fathead minnows. The fish would go through and pick the goldfish out first before they ever touched a regular minnow.

I'm a believer! They are the livliest I have ever seen. Had several just leap outta the bucket. Bill's Bait and Tackle in Elizabethtown carry them.

ever try a orange jig ? Might put them out in the Sun and let them fade a bit (if they're "blaze orange" :p ) ... then give them a shot. Might be their color (the Rosey Reds, that is), or might just be because they wiggle so much on the hook ... but, a light orange jig body might settle that account!!

On Weiss Lake ... you better have some orange/char jigs in 1/32oz, if you're going to shoot docks ;) .... I've seen'em out produce all other colors/sizes !!

I think I've had the grand total of ONE Rosey Red minnow, on a hook of mine ... and it died within a matter of minutes, BEFORE it could even get SEEN by a Crappie ... much less get bit by one :D
All the other minnows I've used, have been the regular Fatheads. And, when I have used them, and been where the Crappie are ... they've yet to turn their noses up at them .... LOL!! Never used Shiners, unless that was all that was available, as they always seemed to die alot quicker than a "Tuffy" (aka Fathead). Always bought "Med" sized minnows, too ... which usually had a mixture of 1.5-2.5 inch sizes. Never seen any Rosey Reds for sale, locally. Most stores that sell them, around here (Lex., Ky), get them from Arkansas ... and they're almost always Fatheads. I say "almost always", because I have had Sticklebacks & Catfish fry mixed in with some of my past purchases ... leading me to think that some of the minnow ponds, that the minnows came from, have had some flood waters get into them ... bringing in some of the local "neighbors" :D
Sticklebacks get their heads crushed, then fed to the Bluegills (to keep them occupied, and away from MY minnows ) ... Mad Toms (Catfish fry) are put on a jighead and tossed anywhere I think a Smallmouth might be hiding ;)

Crappiepappy, I do remember last year around spawn I was using a pumpkin orange/charteuse jig and was tearing them up. I have some Mid-South 2" in that color with some pepper specks mixed in and can't wait to try em'.

Caught My Biggest crappie on a Orange jig head and charteuse Body.
17" 2'12oz.

I've never seen any place where I could purchase the Rosey Reds to even try them. Hear a lot about them, but have never seen them.

I am with you Brad, no where I go has had them!

If you fish any at Kentucky Lake they have them at Baits n Bullets on US 68.
