First Week of May
Usually don't fish crappie a lot in May because I have been so much earlier in the year. This year is different. I have four young ones who have kept me from going and won't be going until that first week of May. Any thoughts on how it will be normally that time of the year. I am guessing it will be post spawn which I have never fished for in my life besides fishing under a lantern. Am I wasting my time or not. I will be going to KY Lake for 5 days and figure the bass should be on for sure but wondered about the crappie. I will always take a cooler full of crappie over 6 bass anyday. Help!!!!

I've been to kentucky lake (paris Landing) in May and its not so bad....we usually fish the 9-14 ft. depths and catch fish....alot more sorting for the bigger fish though. But the bonus is you can start to get some gills and cats by then also, which is a blast.

I never thought about the gills. That could be fun. It is a trip that is going to happen because the wife is taking the kids to see grandma and I am taking the one boy fishing instead. Think we are going to camp out, which should be a blast.

I've been there as late as last week in April and have caught plenty of fish that still had eggs. Some will still be in the spawn mode. Plus as mentioned, the gills and redears should be going pretty good by then.

The heck w/ crappie that time of the year.....one word "REDEAR"! Nothing in the lake pulls nearly as hard and they taste really good as well.
-
I planned a trip for the 9th, 10th, and 11th of May this year for bluegill and shellcrackers with my son instead of the usuall April crappie trip. Watching all of the weather and reading all of the post it looks like something finally worked in my favor. It will be my son's first trip to Kentucky so we're keeping our fingers crossed for good weather.

The catfish will be cranking up in early May also. Look for them on rock banks or rip-rap. We usually use nightcrawlers or raw frozen shrimp under a slip bobber. Bass tackle with 10-14 pound line will work fine. Nothing like carrying SEVERAL coolers full of fillets home. Kids and catfish are a great match!
