Any news on MIllwood?
HIGH AND MUDDY. Real high and real muddy. Real high and real, real muddy.
Unforunately, Millwood was affected by the monsoon also. I arrived on Friday about noon planning on staying for three days at the State Park. The water was rising about 1.5 feet per 24 hours and not expected to crest until today. (Monday).
I talked to one crappie fisherman on Friday afternoon, the fishing had been pretty good, catching good numbers and very good sized crappie buried up in the grass. He said on one day last week his best 10 weighed 22 lbs, and he had caught over 100 lbs of crappie within the last week. But he told me that he had fished on Friday trying to find them and had only caught one.
I ran upriver hoping to find some clearer water in some of the old lakes and sloughs. I was unable to find any. I fished for a couple of hours on Friday afternoon and a couple of hours on Saturday morning without a bite and after talking to others and knowing that the water was going to continue to rise until Monday, we packed it in.
I just got back and the water is at 6' above normal pool. I went to places that are always clear during high water and they looked like a paper sack. Crappie were NOT biting. The catfish did howerver. Lots of debris coming downriver and it actually choked up the ramp at Yarbrough Landing. I ahd to pull close to 20 logs out of the way and downstream to be able to get the trailer backed in Sunday evening. What a mess.

Oh, my gosh....did I just get slammed? Well, let me tell the story a little bit different this time to squash "bobberwatchers" fears of my prowess. What I failed to mention is that I, in my old wisdom, had a plan "B" and was prepared. I just happen to know of several river shelfs that always hold copius amounts of catfish and I ended up catching my limit of 5-10 lb channel and Miss white whisker heads. Now in the event that appals some of the died in the wool crappie fishermen/ladies, I had to regroup for a promised fish fry that evening. Now the fun part was they all were caught on 10-12' graphite crappie rods on 8 lb test. I got my line snapped more than 15 times cause of the current and the size of those be-hemoths. But it was a ton-o-fun. So I guess you could say I overcame the adverse conditions.....but wait, what did Alan catch this weekend? Was it flak?
Looking forward to this weekend on Conway. Hope to meet a bunch of new friends.
