Fusing Humminbird SI question???

I been reviewing the 1197 stuff (thinking hard about it) and noticed it calls for a 3 amp fuse. My 797 calls for a 3 amp fuse. I looked up the 997 and, yep,calls for a 3 amp fuse.

Me, being the observant one, thinks this sounds pretty odd. In fact, something ain't right here. What is getting protected? Ain't no way the little unit needs fusing like the big the one. Might as well wrap the fuse with tin foil.

Maybe this is a one fits all application. I guess I need lessons in Ohm's Law again.

The 997 would run on one of those smaller power supplies, 1 amp wasn't it. The 1197 runs a bit more, so they can't use them so both would work on a 3 amp.

I'm sure you know that a fuse is to limit the max amperage flowing to the unit and should be some larger than needed to provide the max amps the unit normally draws. It could be that there is nothing in the smaller units that a 3 amp load will harm, even though they don't normally draw that load.

Canepole, have you tried the software I PM'd you? Deepview and Yellowfin?
You have a laptop in your boat, and a 797. Record the scan, pop out the card, and put it in the laptop. You can view on the big screen and get gps coordinates.

why spend the extra 2 grand on the bigger unit.

I understand. My manual says 797 draws 650 ma. Also Humminbird has a disclaimer about over current (on the same page). If the unit only draws 650 ma, then why the disclaimer and 3 amp fuse requirement?

What is getting protected is the wiring going to the unit. That's why fuses are on the battery end of the wire. They protect the wires from heating to the point that the insulation will melt off and the wires can heat whatever they happen to be in contact with until it ignites. Fuses do not protect the unit in any way. If something happens to cause the unit to draw 3A, it's already toast.

I know.:) I am just bringing awareness.

The unit is over fused. Humminbird is covering their tail about a fire and any claim against fried units. They all do this.

Just easier for them little Chiness people to remember one size in each unit,:D
