Mass Crappie
Thanks for starting a Massachusetts String... Yes, we have very healthy population of black crappie here in this state. with over 3500 lakes and ponds, 10-12" crappie are common and some lakes have rewarded me with some 15" crappie. I do get some strange looks when I open my tackle box and all there are just 1/32 oz home made jigs to fish with. Basically I have most of lakes and ponds to myself for crappie fishing, most folks here are into Trout, Bass (LMB & SMB) and salt water stripers. The state record for Crappie is 4 lbs 10 oz. and Bluegill's is 2 lbs 4 oz. I also fly fish for them with a 3 wt rod and have a ton of fun. I will post some Massachusetts style home made jigs and pictures of some of our catches as the season heats up. Thanks again and great website.

^Yes, thats what I love about crappie fishing here in Mass - seems like most anglers up here don't even know what a crappie IS let alone fish for them. Many untouched waters around here!
Hey gillbuster, you been to the new Bas Proshops in Foxboro yet?

Yes I have been to BPS numerous times ... Could go broke in there for sure

Going to be in Marlborugh for 2 weeks starting Feb 22.
Any fishing going on then or is the ice still in?
-
Most likely still ice, but maybe not safe ice.
-
guess I will leave my pole at home.
Stuck up there for 2 weeks:(

It really all depends on the weather. Last year people were still ice fishing in late Feb, but 2 years ago we had a big thaw-out.
