Last year while fishing in our lake I tried using minnows but the turtles would not leave one on the hook long enough for a crappie to get it. Seriously, when you walk to the bank or go out in a boat you will have 5-15 turtles within 30 yards of the boat.
Any thoughts to removing the varmints?
Dead or alive but I am willing to relocate them. I tried making a turtle trap but them prefer crawling up on logs before my wire mesh and pvc trap.
a 22 rifle can do alot of damage to a turtle population in a short amount of time.
12 gauge with #6 at close ranges.... Turtle population is going down with every shot......
I popped six a few months ago with CB's before a neighbor spotted me. The CB's are far quieter than my pellet rifle and a lot more accurate. I have only lived on my lake for a year so I need to keep it quiet. Believe it or not there are people around me that would love to see fishing banned because they are only interested in kayaking around to look at the birds, beavers and turtles.
But I like the way you guys think!!!

A 22 Short by CCI. It's called a CB Short, they are very quiet and probably the quietest currently manufactured. It has 29 gr slug at 710 fps compared to a regular short with a 27 gr slug at 1105 fps.
cb's are awesome on rabbits inside city limits.Like someone else mentioned theyre quieter than a air rifle.
I once saw this trap in a catalog and I've always wanted to try it but I have no idea what I'd do with a net full of turtles.

Do a search for turtle trap and you'll see the one I'm talking about. It kinda sounds like your homemade trap. Maybe you need to shorten your climbing boards so they can't sun there.
Trot lines, boots, and a sharp knife. The trot line is obvious. The boots are to step on their shells while you pull the trotline, the knife....well, no need to get graphic but you get the idea.
What lake is this? Are these snapping turtles....I would think that is what your talking about? Their good eating. Believe it or not they really do taste like chicken. After they are on the trot line pull their heads and and pop them one. That meat is good.
