Ever caught a Flier?
Here's the Flier I caught at a creek in my friends back yard near the coast of North Carolina, it's quite small though but it seems to resemble a Crappie. At first I though it was some type of hybrid species...
Sorry for such a poor quality picture, it was taken on my phone.

But I definitely know what a Crappie looks like and I know what a Crappie is! After plenty of research on panfish, the only fish that came close to the characteristics of the unknown is a Flier.
Here's a bit of the info I found on it:

I've seen an article or two over the years about fliers, but I've never caught one.

Yes I have caught plenty of fliers over the years. Growing up in SE NC I have caught them in rivers, streams, creeks, ditches, ponds, swamps, etc.
Now the I have move here to NE NC I have caught fliers big enough to fillet... I had full intentions to check the record on the flier for NC, as I known the do not typically get as large as other sun fish. I know 12oz was the record at one time, but the is also several kinds of flier brim green is one can't remember the others.
Anyways, a common mistake is made by many anglers... thinking the flier is a young crappie as they have the same distinct markings and shape... Young flier brim have a orangish colored dot on their dorsal fin, where as crappie do not.

I caught one about 25 yrs ago in Lake Malone spillway. I think that I have only seen one other flier in my lifetime.

Never saw or heard of them. Thanks, you learn something everyday!

me and my friend fished a local lake and caught alot of them
always thought they were crappies beczuase we catch them on the same baits we use for crappie
but we went with a guide and he told us what they were
but the only thing ive noticed about them is that they bite in the spring and well into the summer

We were fishing the North River (in NE NC) and got into a school of the biggest I have ever seen. They went ½ to ¾ lbs. Never found them that big again. Usually they are small.

We have them ...
here in KY ... but, can't say as I've ever caught one.
Yep, that's definitely a Flier you got there, Supracerxtreme. Matches up exactly with the pic in my KY FISH ID booklet .. even down to the black slash thru the eye, and the solid fins from front to tail (top and bottom fins).
... cp
